What the Bible says

John 1:35-42

35The next day again John stood, and two of his disciples. 36And beholding Jesus walking, he saith: Behold the Lamb of God. 37And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38And Jesus turning, and seeing them following him, saith to them: What seek you? Who said to him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? 39He saith to them: Come and see. They came, and saw where he abode, and they stayed with him that day: now it was about the tenth hour. 40And Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two who had heard of John, and followed him. 41He findeth first his brother Simon, and saith to him: We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ. 42And he brought him to Jesus. And Jesus looking upon him, said: Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is interpreted Peter.

What the Church teaches

The Lamb of God

John the Baptist called Jesus the “Lamb of God.” The Church sees in Jesus the fulfillment of the lamb of the first Passover.

General Instruction of the Roman Missal 346

To read with your children

Two friends of John followed Jesus. John 1:37

Jesus asked them what they were looking for. John 1:38

They stayed with Jesus all that day. John 1:39

Andrew brought his brother Peter to meet Jesus. John 1:41-42

Who would you like to bring to meet Jesus?

To talk about as a family

  1. Jesus asked, “What are you looking for?” If he asked us today, what would we say?
  2. Andrew did not keep the news to himself: he told his brother. Who do we tell when something good happens?
  3. For the child: can you say what Samuel said, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening”?

This week

This week, before bed, say Samuel’s prayer together: “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”

To pray

Lord Jesus, like Andrew and his friend, we want to be with you. Teach us to listen to you and to bring others to you. Amen.
