What was the relationship between Joseph, son of Jacob and Jesus?

Joseph was sold by his brothers for twenty pieces of silver. He forgave them, and he told them that God turned that evil into good. Genesis 37:28; Genesis 50:19-20

What the Bible says

Genesis 37:28

And when the Madianite merchants passed by, they drew him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ismaelites, for twenty pieces of silver: and they led him into Egypt.

Genesis 50:20

You thought evil against me: but God turned it into good, that he might exalt me, as at present you see, and might save many people.

What Tradition teaches

The Bible does not connect them. Since the first centuries, Christian writers like Tertullian have seen in Joseph a figure of Jesus. Two notes in the Torres Amat Bible say so too, on Genesis 37:13 and on Genesis 50:19. So does the Catholic Encyclopedia (1910, “Joseph”).

What the Church teaches

God can bring good out of evil: that is what Joseph told his brothers. From the greatest evil, the death of the Son of God, God brought the greatest good: our redemption.
