Nazareth

A place in the Bible

Nazareth

The town in Galilee where Mary and Joseph lived, and where Jesus grew up.

What happened here

  1. The Annunciation: there God sent the angel Gabriel to Mary.
  2. Joseph: Joseph lived in Nazareth. From there he went with Mary to Bethlehem. When they came back from Egypt, the family settled in Nazareth.
  3. Jesus grew up there: he was obedient to Mary and Joseph. Because he lived there, people called him “the Nazorean.”
  4. A small town: Nathanael asked if anything good could come from Nazareth. Philip told him, “Come and see.”

Today

Today it is a city in northern Israel.

Where it appears in the Bible

Matthew 2:23; Luke 2:39; Luke 2:51; Luke 1:26-27; Luke 2:4; Luke 4:16; John 1:46; Mark 1:9
