Monte Cassino
A place in the history of the Church
A mountain in Italy, south of Rome, that can be seen from far away. On its top is the monastery St. Benedict founded.
What happened here
- St. Benedict: around the year 529 he went to Monte Cassino and founded a monastery there. He died there.
- St. Scholastica: the sister of St. Benedict. Once a year they spent a whole day together praising God.
- St. Thomas Aquinas: when he was five years old, he was sent to Monte Cassino to learn with the monks.
Today
The monastery still stands on the top of the mountain.
