Caesarea

A place in the Bible

A port city on the coast of the Holy Land, where the Roman governors lived. It is not Caesarea Philippi.

What happened here

  1. Cornelius: in Caesarea lived Cornelius, a Roman centurion who prayed and gave many alms.
  2. Peter: Peter came to Caesarea, to the house of Cornelius. While he was speaking, the Holy Spirit came down on all who were listening.
  3. Philip: Philip, one of the Seven, lived in Caesarea with his four daughters. St. Paul stayed there with him.

Today

Its ruins remain by the sea, in Israel, between Tel Aviv and Haifa.

Where it appears in the Bible

Acts 10:1-2; Acts 10:24; Acts 10:44; Acts 21:8-9

What the Bible says

Acts 10:1-2

1And there was a certain man in Caesarea, named Cornelius, a centurion of that which is called the Italian band; 2A religious man, and fearing God with all his house, giving much alms to the people, and always praying to God.

Acts 10:24

And the morrow after, he entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, having called together his kinsmen and special friends.

Acts 10:44

While Peter was yet speaking these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them that heard the word.
